Final Scene: Flower Magic

This is arguably the most important shot in my whole film - this is what everything has been building up to. It needs to be visually striking, compelling, and satisfying to watch. I did some animation tests right at the beginning of this project so I knew how to do it and the kind of look that I wanted to achieve, but I started completely from scratch as I wanted the witch to be perfectly symmetrical in the shot and I also wanted some extra animation, such as her eyes opening and closing. Also, in the original animation tests I created, I put a soft boil on everything and I didn't want to do that here in case it distracted from the action.

This is version without colour. It looks quite understated and also a little flat - maybe even anti climatic? I think it will look and feel very different when I've added the colour though. Additionally, the swelling music in this scene will help to strengthen and support it. I think I'm going to use the same colours as my animation tests - yellow and green.

This is the first version of the shot. I really like the colours that I've used here. The green almost looks a little sinister and other-worldly, as if she's using dark magic to create something until you remember that green also means growth, nature, and vitality. I want to change a couple of things about this shot for the next version. I think that dancing light on her face starts too late, after the light travels up the arms. I also think that I want to add more shadow to the shot, so that when the flower glows, it really cuts through the darkness to reveal the extent of her powers.

This is the second version of the shot, and will probably be the final one I use in the film. It's pretty similar to the previous one, except that I've added more shadow in order to look like the plant's glow really lights up and cuts through the darkness. I also changed the dancing light on her face to match up better with the light travelling up her arms. All in all I'm pretty happy with it and I like the addition of the animated eyes. I won't have time to change anything about it before hand in, but I may play around with the dancing light before Film House. I'm still trying to decided whether or not it's too much - If I should make it look more like a subtle shimmer. I'm really happy with it otherwise.
