Final Scene: The Flower

In the animation tests I made right at the start of this project, the witch was growing what looking like a sprout of leaves or a sapling. For my final film, I wanted it to be something a little more impressive. I wanted something that would contrast with the green glow of the scene, as I thought that it would be hard to differentiate in the shot as well as quite over whelming if everything was green. Pinks and red contrast well with green so I decided to design something new for this shot.

The flower is first seen in the film here - on one of the ingredients pages. I wanted to keep it subtle, so as not to give too much of the narrative away, but I knew that I would need to introduce it somewhere fairly early.

As the flower is first seen as a drawing in the witch's book, it was made to look unrealistic. However, I knew that I needed a 'real' one for when she grows it with her powers. I would have to remove the pencil outline and make the colours much for vibrant and bold so as to stand out from the green glow. I would also make it differ slightly from her drawing, as her drawn observation of a flower wouldn't be as perfect as the real thing. I also knew that I wanted it to be perfectly symmetrical - just like many other elements of the film.
This is the growth of the flower. I knew that I'd need something striking and clear for the scene where she grows it with her powers. I also knew that I wanted the petals to slowly unfurl from the bud, which I think is something that I've achieved well here. This is the longest piece of uninterrupted animation in the whole film. This makes sense, since this is the climatic scene.
