Opening Scene: The Plant Room

I'm really pleased that I added this shot to the original animatic as I believe it really showcases her love for all things natural and her skill for caring after plants. I knew that I'd want to do multiple colour palette tests for this shot as there are so many possibilities, and the animation that I wanted for it is very minimal.

Plant room 1

I wanted to start off dark as the clock room had a dark wall as well. I want to keep the plants all the same colour as it would have taken too long and been too complicated so I'm happy with the colours I've used for them. I chose to have bright pink and bright blue pots as a common denominator with these shots so that I could compare them properly, but I won't use these bright colours for the actual film as I don't think they go very well.

Plant room 2

I really like this variation of muted colours for the pots as they're much more natural, however, I think that the background colour needs to be richer. The texture behind the plants makes it look like the walls are shabby and damaged which isn't at all what I want.

Plant room 3

I like this teal background, it makes the greenery of the plants show up really well. However, this is the colour of the witch's dress which is very vibrant and I feel like I want to save this particular colour just for her.

Plant room 4

I really like the muted colours of the pots in this variation, I may use these particular colours for my final chosen colour test.

Plant room 5

I think that this beige works well despite being one of the plainer colours. The green of the plants is a nice contrast against it.

Plant room 6

These muted colours also work well, I really like the burnt orange pots and I've made a note of this colour so that I can use it in future parts of the film.

Plant room 7

This deep rich purple is quite similar to the colour of the clock wall in the first shot which I think is why I like it so much. The green also stands out nicely against it as they are complementary colours on the colour wheel.

Plant room 8

I like these muted colours but not as much as the other ones.

Plant room 9

For my final choice I've decided to go with the same colour as the background wall for the clock shot. I think that this ties in nicely and helps the light rays and dust particles to show up well. As this is the only piece of animation in this shot, I needed a dark background and despite all of my experimentation, following on from the first shot seemed the logical decision.

I'm so pleased with how this shot has turned out. It's exactly how I imagined it and the dust particles are so convincing. I thought I would have to do something complicated on After Effects but I just created it via Photoshop by using a Kyle Brush named 'Dusty Bits' and key framing them to move slowly in contrasting directions. I think that this shot really helps to set the scene for the film and I'm incredibly happy with how it turned out.
