Although the audience has already met the witch in the opening scene, this is the first shot since then where I introduce her again. By showing the witch choosing which ingredients she needs to gather, I'm reminding the audience of her presence while simultaneously pushing the narrative.
This is the first version that I rendered. In the beginning I wanted to place the witch on top of the texture layer in order to try and differentiate her from her surroundings, but I think that I want to have the texture on top of her character as well. Her hand without texture looks very flat and doesn't fit in well with the rest of the aesthetic.
This is the second version of the shot where I've placed her texture layer over her as well. I prefer this to the previous one. The animation is very simple, all I've done is key framed her hand moving, but I'm pleased with it - simple yet effective. I like that the audience is able to see the plant pages in more detail as well. As I've used a pencil brush it does make it look like she's drawn and coloured them herself which I what I was trying to suggest.
