Scene 2: Storyboard & Animatic.

After introducing the characters and setting in my opening scene, I wanted to use this scene as a device to introduce the plot of the story. This is also where the sound design ends and the music begins. I still don't have a composer or sound designer for my film, but this scene will give them an effective way to introduce the music.

This is the opening for my second scene and will start with the record player being turned on and spinning around. At first there will be some crackling and then the music will begin. The record player turns on by itself to continue with magical elements I've introduced to the film.

This next segment of the scene is one which is a bit more complex. This is the first hint of what her motivations are - she is looking in a book for a what seems to be a magic potion. The book opens on its own, again highlighting her powers and strengthening the idea that she is creating something magical. This sequence will take time, but I think that it will be really striking and effective and will help to show off my animation skills if I pull it off correctly.

This is the first page of the plant designs that I've come up with for the story. I wanted a mixture of plants, flowers, and mushrooms so that it doesn't look like a recipe book/book of ingredients, but more like an encyclopedia of the types of plants that can be found around her.

I want it to look like she's drawn and coloured theses illustrations herself so I'll be sure to use organic brushes for the real thing. I want the colours to be muted, natural, and complimentary of each other.

I used the symmetry tool when creating these designs as I think that it looks really striking and helps in the continuation of the design elements of my film. I like how some of these are easily recognisable as plants whereas others look a little more interesting and unusual.

For the lettering on top of pages I just translated words such as 'flowers' and 'recipe' from English into Ancient Runes. I think that this helps to enforce the magical elements as well as keeping the true nature of the book a mystery.

This next segment of the scene introduces the witch back into the story. The audience hasn't seen her since the last wide shot of the opening scene so showing her running her finger down the book to choose her ingredients is a good way to remind the audience of her presence and to slowly reveal the plot line.

This last shot of the scene will also be a relatively complex one. This signifies what the witch's intentions seem to be to the audience - she's making a magic potion. I want to have steam similar to what I made for the kettle in the opening scene as well as fire. I also want the light from the fire to reflect off the bottles of ingredients.

This is the final animatic for the second scene in my film. I think that it works really well in terms of establishing the plot line. In the first scene we are introduced to the witch, the familiar, and their current setting. This scene continues with the magical elements while simultaneously introducing the film score. It also slowly reveals the motives of the witch while not giving the game away that it's not a potion that she's making, it's just her dinner. I also think that the animation in this scene will be simple yet effective. Aside from the book pages turning, the rest of the animation is very understated but will still be visually striking.
