The Forest Moodboard

Forest Moodboard - Images sourced from Google and assembled in Photoshop CC.

  • I want the art atyle of the forest to be some what realistic but also stylised, E.g. Firewatch by small game studio Campo Santo. There are many brushes + textures that I can use off Kyle Brush found on Photoshop. I'd like to see if I can do hand drawn backgrounds and then colour afterwards digitally.

  • I would like to explore the different types of trees that grow in the forest where she lives. I need to do some research on which trees are native to Scotland, in particular, Edinburgh. Maybe ask Lindy? (personal tutor) Explore Blackford Hill and Botanical Gardens.

  • I'm particularly interested in using watercolour in my film. I don't know whether or not to do it physically myself or scan it in and do it digitally. It would be more time consuming physically, but also more authentic which is what I want.

  • I also want the different tree types to be stylised and also realistic. Would like them to be easily recognisable and easy to differentiate between all of the other types of trees.

  • I'd like to extend the colour palette to everything, not just the trees. I'd like to see if I can stick to 4/5 colours and then have the two main characters (her and the familiar?) to be bold + outstanding colour, E.g. cool vs. warm/blue vs. red colours.

  • At this moment in time the changing of the seasons is integral to my story. This may change, however, but I'm really interested in the contrasting colour palettes and changes in tone which the seasons bring.

  • I'd like to have some beautiful and enchanting scenes + places within the forest. This is called the 'Rackotzbrucke' Devil's Bridge. Found in Germany, this 19th Century bridge is designed so it creates a perfect circle in its reflection. I'd like to draw inspiration from this to include architecture in my film.

  • Another part of the forest I would like to include is a river/lake/pond. For my 10x10 last semester I made a film which included a pond with fish and lily pads. I'd like to do something like that within this film as it was a very striking + lovely shot that I'd like to recreate for this story.

  • I'd like to have some interesting shots of the different views of the forest. Aerial shots would be interesting and would really help to capture the colours.

  • I was also thinking about experimenting with collage and textures. Perhaps even some lino prints of trees would be effective to make the backgrounds look beautiful and illustrious. If not, it's very easy to create layers of different textures and colour within photoshop. On the other hand, it would be nice to have physical evidence of this.
