The Witch Moodboard

The relationship that the witch has with her familiar has to be the most important and integral part of the story. Their companionship is what moves the story forward, it provides all of the emotion + comedy. I'm still not sure what to call them - I can't seem to get the names 'SELMA & SLY' out of my head, though. However, I'm careful not to name them or the film too soon before I know what the story line is going to be. I need to look up more things about the occult, maybe something then will jump out at me as I just got 'Selma' from an anagram of 'Salem'.
I'm not sure whether or not to include a broomstick within this story. It may be too 'witchy' though which isn't typically what I'm going for. I think though it might also be good to include a broomstick - maybe the whole film should be about her finding and making a new broomstick E.g. which is the best tree and where can she find it. Maybe she just has a staff or stick? I'm concerned that I don't want to play to typically witchy tropes or stereotypes - I don't want this to be a film to watch on Halloween, for example. However, it needs to include genuine magical elements.
I'm excited to create the witch as a character, especially her outfit. I don't know whether or not to make it traditionally 'witchy' or to make her clothes more practical E.g. jeans and a t-shirt. I quite like the idea of her having some kind of hat and even though I don't want her to be too 'witchy' I do like the idea of a pointed hat. It would be nice to have some sort of head wear - perhaps a flower crown?

The witch's care for plants, nature + animals is also a very important plot point within the story. I was also toying with the idea of her mood reflecting and showing through the plants and the forest E.g. when she's sad or happy or poorly it can easily be seen through the state of the environment around her. She also does all she can to help animals - the image of the girl and the frog was a huge inspiration for some scenes in the film that I'm thinking about. SHE LOVES ANIMALS.
I'm excited to also try and incorporate plants into her clothing. However, I don't want her to wear leaves + be mistaken for a fairy, for example. The colour palette will be very important regarding her outfit.
I don't want the film to be cliched but I do think that there needs to be some elements that help the viewers to recognise that she is a witch, albeit a plant or botanical one.
I actually really like this image of the girl flying on this broomstick, partly because she looks really cool, and partly because the broomstick looks more like a live tree branch, rather than a dead bundle of twigs - it's not an especially 'witchy' broom.
Some of these photos are so great for thinking about inspiration as after looking at them it helped me think about what scenes I want to include within the film. For example, this picture above with the girl in the water - I have known from the start that I want a scene where the witch is in the water. This will also help to incorporate my pond artwork from 10x10 and also help to showcase how the familiar changes form to suit the environment.
